My fiance's cat has a large skin area with no hair, likely due to licking. Any remedies?

We have tried the vet, and we gave him pills and something to rub in his bare patch. The skin is not irritated, there is just no hair there, He seems perfectly healthy. He is a big whiner, and I think he has problems with not getting enough attention even though he gets tons of it. I have read some of this due to boredom even? He started this about 6 months before me an my fiance moved in together (we moved in together 4 months ago). The vet said he hasn't a clue, and gave us medicine like most doctors due (after administering expensive tests with no results, of course). Please help.

If your fiance has had the cat for a long time, he may be stressing out. Even though you moved in together about 4 months ago, I'm sure you were spending more and more time together at your fiance's house. Cats don't always react well to change. You being around more may very well have stressed the little guy out. We have an older cat that is VERY sensitve to changes that take place in the hosue. She would literally lick all the hair off her tummy and continued to lick it until it was completely raw. We gave her a 'kitty prozac' for a while, then took her off it. It helped her a great deal. You may also try applying things with a bitter or sour taste to the bald area. Lemon juice would be one example. If you don't want to go that route, you can always be patient and wait for him to come around. Give him lots of love and attention and make him feel like he's the king of the castle.

Your cat is hopeless, you will just have to live with the fact that the cat will never grow any hair in that spot.

raise his tail and spray some turpentine up his bum, and the cat will forget all about whining and licking the raw spot.

get one of those things to put around the cats neck.( the cone collar) just until the hair grows back then take it off and see if the spot appears again. if it does then put the cone thingy back on. eventually the cat will learn that if he licks, he gets the cone. ( cats dont like those things very much because they cant lick themselves in this case thats a good thing)

try this sour apple spray that you can buy at like petsmart, target and stuff. they HATE the taste. It will take a while for the hair to grow back but my cat did the same.

I have the exact same problem with my cat (Siamese mix). He licked off most of the fur on his tail shortly after my boyfriend moved in. The vet thought that the change caused him to be stressed out so we actually tried putting him on Prozac for a while. That did nothing but make him glossy eyed.

Since the skin didn't seem to be irritated we decided to just let it go. 6 years later, he still keeps his tail groomed to look like that of a lion. He's a nervous cat who gets a lot of love and we figure, if he wants to keep his tail like that, it's up to him. Just get used to people looking at him funny.
